If you are considering studying Spanish at university, you should consider undertaking a course of study Spanish language at a university in Spain, or at a university in another Spanish speaking country like Mexico, Chile, Argentina etc.
It is the ultimate option for the serious student of Spanish. For a non-native speaker this is a significant challenge as one would be studying amongst native speakers of the language, in a total immersion environment but the benefits will be the acquisition of a very high level of spoken and written Spanish.
Compare this with studying Spanish at a university in a non-Spanish speaking country and the difference will be significant, because in the Spanish speaking country the student is surrounded by the language at its purest level, and surrounded and immersed in the culture. The shops, the signs, the chatter of daily life, the busses, bars, restaurants, apartments... everything you do and see and hear and visit will be Spanish. Notices, radio, television, signs, advertisements, the conversation around you at the university and, as importantly, outside it, will be in Spanish.
In a non-Hispanic environment the conversation around the campus, the notices, the speeches, the other lectures will not be in Spanish. Many, if not most of your buddies will not speak to you in Spanish. You will therefore miss thousands of hours of Spanish over the course of a three-year degree programme by studying in a non-Spanish speaking university.
If you are SERIOUS about learning top level fluent Spanish enrol in a Spanish course in a Spanish speaking university in preference to one where your native tongue is spoken, if you have the opportunity to do so.
In the total immersion situation you may find the first couple of months totally overwhelming (depending on your level of Spanish) but after a while you will experience a major shift, and so much mass of 'stuff' will have been absorbed into the subconscious, that at some point it all just 'comes together' and all of a sudden your level of comprehension takes off, as does your speech and conversation.
By studying at a university in a Spanish speaking country your level of Spanish, on completion of your studies, will be many times superior to the level you would have attained had you stayed home and learned Spanish with English instruction.
